PATH (Professional Advancement & Training in Hospice) Education series is a thoughtfully designed education series for healthcare professionals seeking deeper clinical skill, ethical clarity and human-centered presence in end-of-life care. Participants engage with real-world cases, practical assessment tools and interdisciplinary approaches that translate directly to bedside care while strengthening confidence in supporting patients and families through emotional, cultural and existential challenges.
Terminal Delirium

Terminal delirium is a common yet often distressing part of the end-of-life journey for patients and their loved ones. This class provides a compassionate, clinically grounded overview of terminal delirium, including how to recognize its signs, understand contributing factors and respond with thoughtful, evidence-based care. Participants will explore practical approaches to assessment and management, while also learning how to support families through the emotional, relational, and spiritual challenges that may arise.

ELNEC (End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium)

The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) project is a national education initiative to improve end-of-life care. The course is open to the public and is geared toward professionals and family caregivers who are or will provide end-of-life care. We host one class annually in the spring, or it can be taught off-site to groups or organizations.
Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. The course is $95 and 8 CEs are available to nurses for an additional $90 fee. Lunch and snacks are included.
Ethical Psycho-Social Support in End-of-Life Care

This module strengthens participants’ ability to provide compassionate, culturally responsive psychosocial support while navigating the ethical complexities of serious illness and dying. Grounded in core ethical principles—autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice—participants learn to communicate with honesty, protect trust, honor patient values and choices, and advocate for equitable, comfort-focused care for both patients and families.

Spiritual Care in Death and Dying

As life nears its end, many people wrestle with questions of fear, regret, hope, meaning, forgiveness, and legacy. This module explores the spiritual and existential dimensions of death and dying, helping participants recognize and respond to such concerns. This module prepares participants to identify spiritual and existential needs and respond in respectful, supportive ways. Participants practice spiritual assessment, communication strategies, and culturally responsive support that honors what matters most and strengthens family support during anticipatory grief.

Complex Pain Management for Dying People

This advanced session explores complex pain at the end of life through a whole-person lens. Participants learn to assess and manage pain using advanced pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, while considering the psychological, social-emotional, and spiritual contributors that influence suffering. Real cases and discussion translate concepts into bedside practice.

Complex Non-Pain Symptom Management
December 3 @ 12:00 pm
End-of-life care often involves multiple distressing symptoms beyond pain. This module reviews common physical and psychological non-pain symptoms and emphasizes comprehensive assessment and a balanced use of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions. Through case studies, participants practice prioritizing comfort, anticipating symptom trajectories, and individualizing care based on patient goals.
